I came across this book after a friend of mine told me it was one of the best books he’d read for a long time. After finally obtaining a copy from a different friend of mine, I set about reading it to see what all the fuss was about. Sure enough, this book blew me away. This is the first book by Brandon Sanderson that I have ever read and I gotta say, I love his writing style. It kept me interested. There weren’t any pages in this book where I had to go back and read paragraphs because I zoned out… and that’s a big deal for me, that happens a lot. Everything was easy to read while still maintaining a complex fantasy world and plot. The Final Empire was a lot of fun to read, I would highly recommend it to any fantasy fans. The characters came alive and made me care about them. Vin is a very interesting heroine and I loved reading about her journey. Like I said earlier this book was able to transport me to a fantasy world without overwhelming me, which can easy happen when reading a close to 700 page novel that’s the first in a trilogy. There wasn’t anything too complicated that I got lost… and there weren’t so many characters that I had to make a list in order to keep track. Kelsier was another great character in this novel that was mysterious enough to keep us guessing as to whether or not he was actually on the right side, kind of like Severus Snape. The magic system was unique, it wasn’t like anything I’ve read in fantasy novels before and this was another reason I was able to become so engrossed in this story. Normally novels of this size would have taken me a while to get through but this one drew me in and made the pages fly by. I definitely recommend this book and can’t wait to read the other two.
